How to Get Your Florida Driver's License
You have 30 days after establishing Florida residency to get your Florida driver's license. Here's exactly how to do it.
What You Need
- Proof of identity — US passport, birth certificate, or valid out-of-state license
- Proof of Social Security number — SS card, W-2, or 1099
- Two proofs of Florida residency — Utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement, or mortgage docs
- Payment — $48 for a Class E license (most common)
Step-by-Step Process
- Gather your documents — See the list above. Bring originals, not copies.
- Visit a Florida DHSMV office — Find your nearest location at flhsmv.gov
- Complete the application — Available online or at the office
- Pass the vision test — Basic eye exam done on-site
- Pass the written test — 50 questions, need 40 correct (80%). Waived if you surrender a valid out-of-state license.
- Get your photo taken — Your temporary license prints on the spot
- Receive your permanent license — Mailed to your Florida address within 7–10 business days
Tips
- Go early — DHSMV offices get packed after 10am
- Book online if available — Some locations offer appointments
- Surrender your old license — Florida requires you to give up your out-of-state license
- Update your registration too — You have 10 days to register your vehicle in Florida

FAQs
Do I need to take a driving test?
No — if you have a valid out-of-state license, the road test is waived. You'll still need to pass the vision test.
Can I keep my out-of-state license?
No. Florida law requires you to surrender your previous license when you get a Florida one.
What if my out-of-state license is expired?
If it's been expired for more than a year, you'll need to take both the written and road tests.
